John J. Billey, 83, of North Canton, Ohio passed away Thanksgiving Day, November 24. He died peacefully in his residence in Fairmont, Minnesota where he had relocated to be near his oldest daughter.

John was born in Cleveland, Ohio on November 22, 1933, and graduated from Mayfield High School in 1951. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology with a minor in sociology from Kent State University in 1955 where he was also a member of ROTC. John married Patricia Miller from Canton in 1955. John J. Billey, 83, of North Canton, Ohio passed away Thanksgiving Day, November 24. He died peacefully in his residence in Fairmont, Minnesota where he had relocated to be near his oldest daughter.

John was born in Cleveland, Ohio on November 22, 1933, and graduated from Mayfield High School in 1951. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology with a minor in sociology from Kent State University in 1955 where he was also a member of ROTC. John married Patricia Miller from Canton in 1955. He then proceeded to a Master of Arts degree in psychology in 1957, also from Kent State.

John served as an officer in the United States Army from 1957 to 1968, starting as a Second Lieutenant and ending service after receiving the rank of Major. He was stationed at Fort Benjamin Harrison, IN; the US Army Recruiting Main Station, Butte, MT; Fort Benning, GA; Fort Riley, KS; Ft Shafter, Honolulu, HA; the Presidio in San Francisco, CA; and the Office of the Adjutant General in Washington, DC. Following military service, John joined the faculty of Kent State University, Stark County campus as a professor of psychology from 1968-1996. During his years at Kent, he also worked as a licensed counselor with North Canton Psychologists; he worked at United Cerebral Palsy; at Human Development and Counseling; the Alcoholism and Drug Addiction Association; and at Molly Stark Hospital.

In 1968, John joined A.A. and remained a dedicated member for the rest of his life. He was a fitness advocate for much of his adult life. He devoted himself to long-distance running, completing 70 miles per week during his peak years. He was passionate about life-long learning, weight-lifting, fitness, nutrition, and, in later years, a whole foods, plant-based diet. He also was an animal-lover and greatly enjoyed music and films.

In addition to his mother, Margaret (Pnakovich) Groth, and step-father, Bill Groth, he was preceded in death by his biological father, John Billey, Sr. and son, Jeffory Billey. Surviving are his daughters, Susan McCollough and her husband Cameron of Armstrong, IA, and Sharon Mirchandani and her husband Dilip of Moorestown, NJ; grandchildren, Mark Filips (Jen), Jacqueline Holgate (Garrett), Maia Mirchandani, and Milan Mirchandani; and great-grandchildren, Evelyn Filips, Jonathan Filips, Henrik Holgate, and one on-the-way Holgate.

A Memorial Service/Visitation will be held on Monday, December 19, 2016 from 6-8 pm at Karlo-Libby Funeral Home, 5000 Everhard Rd. NW, Canton, Ohio. Military Honors will precede the service. Interment will be at North Lawn Cemetery, Canton.
